Every day between now and September 10th, we will be featuring one artist who will be participating in DIMENSIONS 2015. Meet our first artist . . .
Medium: Found Objects, Mild Steel
How long have you been creating? I’ve been creating all of my life, one way or another. Transforming objects from their original purpose to something I’ve imagined or envisioned isn’t new for me; working with steel has become a real obsession since 2013.
What inspires you to do what you do? Visual art, for me, is about communication. I’ve done a fair amount of writing, and while I enjoy it, I find sculpture a wonderfully freeing, expanded vocabulary. The physicality is extremely satisfying, and there is an immediacy to it that’s quite cathartic.
Our material culture is vast; what it all means can be very puzzling. I have a need to take what exists and shape it into objects that articulate the questions and thoughts turning in my mind: who are we, how did we get here, where are we going, what is this relationship between what we make and what makes us. Old questions, current thoughts . . . for me it’s all very interactive between the shaper and the shaped.
