Shirley Lawrence – Clay, Bronze and Stone Sculptor            

How long have you been creating?  Having taught Squash, Badminton, Tennis and Physical Education for many years, I realized that the artistic side of me was lacking.  I naturally turned to clay.  I love the hands on three dimensional challenge. I have been working (sometimes playing with the mud) for approximately 20 years. I had the enjoyment of teaching clay to others knowing they could continue through their life time enjoying and always learning.

What inspires you to do what you do?  When my husband was very ill I needed something to make me smile so started making whimsical dragons, elves etc. However the human form and facial expressions has always fascinated me. I challenge myself every time.

Artist Statement                                                                                                                      The relaxation and focus of creating many different works gives me great satisfaction, knowing there is always more to learn and create.
