April 2020 Workshops

Introduction to Stone Tool Making (Flintknapping)

Stone tools were first made by our ancestors over 3 million years ago across the world and they are the best-preserved evidence of our past. This class will introduce you to techniques of brittle stone fracture using antler and stone flaking implements. By learning to control fracture using hard-hammer or soft hammer percussion and fine pressure-flaking, participants can expect to make simple tools such as flake knives, hide scrapers, simple arrow heads, or spear points. The core stone will be obsidian, a sharp volcanic glass, and participants will be required to wear eye protection and leather gloves.

Stone, working tools, and eye goggles provided. Participants will need to supply their own leather gloves. Well-fitting work gloves recommend.
